New Market

New Market

My son Baljit took me to visit New Market, a town in Virginia, USA which is well known site of a skirmish in the American Civil War between a small Union Army and a small Confederate Army. Warfare returned in the Valley Campaigns of 1864. On May 15, 1864, New Market was the site of the Battle of New Market. Students as young as 15 years old from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) fought alongside the Confederate Army and forced Union General Franz Sigel and his army out of the Shenandoah Valley. Every year VMI cadets commemorate the 85-mile march from Lexington, Virgina to New Market made by the cadets in 1864, who finished with their victorious charge at the Battle of New Market.

Museums and Grounds

In addition to the museum and farm, miles of battlefield walking trails offer breathtaking views of the Shenandoah Valley and North Fork of the Shenandoah River. Artifacts convey the story of Virginia in the Civil War. Features of this museum include: the slab glass mural wall by artist Ami Shamir; the Emmy award-winning film, “Field of Lost Shoes”, the Robert Raeburn Civil War Art Gallery and the Kaminsky Gallery of Civil War Firearms.

New Market Battlefield State Historical Park is a historic American Civil War battlefield and national historic district located near New Market, Shenandoah County, Virginia. In the middle of the battlefield stands the Bushong House, used by both sides as a hospital during the battle and now the visitor centre for the 300-acre park.
