Jasbir “Guddi” Vohra: A Life of Generosity, Dedication, and Determination

Early Life and Family Heritage

Jasbir Vohra—affectionately known as Guddi—was born on August 18, 1939, in Gujjarkhan (now in Pakistan). She hailed from a distinguished army family, the daughter of Major SS Bakshi and Balwant Kaur Bakshi. From them, she inherited a legacy of generosity, dedication, and steadfast determination.

Over six decades, Guddi stood beside her husband, Prithi (“Kaku”), shaping his life and career. She nurtured and guided their sons—Baljit Singh Vohra (Dobin) and Lakhinder Jit Singh Vohra (Lak)—instilling in them the values that propelled their academic and professional successes. Her influence extended to her grandson, Jasmehar Jit Singh Vohra (Jaz), an AI engineer at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, where he leads projects to enhance public services.

Education, Athletics, and Campus Leadership

Guddi pursued a Bachelor of Arts at Agra College, one of India’s premier institutions and alma mater to notable figures like Moti Lal Nehru. There, she distinguished herself both academically and athletically:

  • Athletics Achievements (1957–1959)
    • Shot Put: Multiple college records and media recognition
    • Javelin Throw: Consistent podium finishes
    • Discus Throw: College champion and regional acclaim
  • Badminton Champion: Dominated women’s singles and later partnered with Dobin in mixed doubles
  • Campus Roles: Treasurer of the Agra College Union; active in dramatics and social initiatives

Her collegiate successes ignited a lifelong passion for sports, dramatics, elocution, and essay contests she championed across generations, encouraging Jaz in his own academic endeavors.

Rotary Service and Community Engagement

A pioneer member of her local Rotary Club, Guddi embodied the “dream to achievement” spirit:

  • Helped establish the club alongside Prithi and fellow Rotarians
  • Rotary District Governor’s Special Citation for perfect attendance at district events
  • Mentored youth through scholarships and recognition programs

Her son Lak’s Rotary Scholarship to Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and a Rotary Club plaque for his contributions stand as testaments to her influence. Her support of community service inspired Jaz to pursue projects that blend technology with public good.

Culinary Excellence and Home Science

Guddi’s kitchen was her canvas. Renowned for perfection in taste and presentation, she:

  • Directed food and beverage arrangements for Rotary Shivalik events
  • Earned a Preservation & Canning of Fruit & Vegetables certification (1980) from the Community Canning & Preservation Center, Government of India
  • Volunteered with St. John Ambulance Association, earning a “First Aid to the Injured” certification

Family gatherings—whether in India or at her sons’ homes in Virginia—were always graced by her signature dishes, each prepared with meticulous care.

Craftsmanship, Welfare Work, and Entrepreneurship

From childhood, Guddi mastered stitching and knitting, often supporting her mother and siblings. As Regional Secretary of the Army Officers Wives Welfare Association, she taught these skills to underserved women in multiple garrison cities.

In the 1970s, she joined her father’s travel agency, Sindbad Travels, Holland, as tour leader. She led Dutch and Antillean groups across India, winning accolades for her enthusiasm and organizational flair.

Travel, Legacy, and Family Inspiration

Guddi cherished the occasions she traveled with Prithi and their sons. Early on, she revisited England and France, taking in familiar sights and quiet cafés. Later, she joined shorter family trips to Nepal and the United Arab Emirates, enjoying both the mountains and the modern skylines. In North America, she made several journeys along the eastern seaboard of the United States, delighting in simple road trips and cozy fall landscapes. True to her nurturing spirit, whenever Dobin or Lak settled in a new city—be it Virginia, NYC, Kathmandu, St. Kitts, Bucharest or Dubai—Guddi was there to help set up their homes, infusing each space with warmth and her signature attention to detail. Jaz fondly recalls his one year living with his grandmother in Chandigarh, where Guddi encouraged his academic and personal hobbies.

Enduring Influence and Farewell

Guddi’s life was a masterclass in forbearance, grit, and purpose. She inspired her husband, sons, and grandson—Jaz’s leadership in public-service AI projects reflects the values she instilled.

On July 19, 2020, Guddi left for her heavenly abode. Yet her elegance, spirit, and guiding light continue to lead her family and community into the future.
