Baljit Vohra (referred to as Dobin at home) is a Senior Vice President with Louis Berger, a global multi-disciplinary services firm specializing in infrastructure development, economic growth and alternative livelihoods development programs.
In his 25 years of development work, Dobin has worked with host country governments, private sector and non-government organizations on rule of law, competitiveness, trade facilitation, skills upgradation and financial inclusion Programs. He has held leadership positions on and overseen several large multidisciplinary projects in over 20 countries for multilaterals and bilaterals, including the World Bank; Department for International Development (DfID) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Dobin’s professional journey has taken him to the former Soviet Bloc where he supported mass privatization initiatives, to Central Europe; the Eastern Caribbean and China where he set up stock exchanges and supported pension reform, to Madagascar where he supported privatization, to Iraq and Nepal where he helped formal financial institutions reach isolated communities, to Kuwait and Pakistan where he has developed employment programs for at-risk youth and to Nepal again where he has supported post-earthquake recovery and reconstruction efforts. Dobin has also witnessed first-hand natural and man-made disasters- events that have strengthened his resolve to help change people’s lives.
Dobin migrated to the States in 1987 where he pursued his MBA in Finance and Investments at the George Washington University, Washington, DC. Prior to 1987, he completed his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering, University of Jabalpur. Born on July 5, 1961 (a Cancerian to the core), Dobin’s personal interests include the arts, theater, international travel, the NFL, cricket and golf. He is a teetotaler and non-smoker.
He is passionate, intense and committed to serving those that have helped him shape his life, in particular his inspirational mother (Guddi) and a mentor father (Prithi). He spends time between his permanent home in Virginia, his rented condo in Dubai and his apartment in Delhi. He also owns a small condo in St. Kitts (Eastern Caribbean) where he worked in the early 2000s. He is currently devoting a considerable amount of his time in Nepal where he is involved in high profile economic development programs funded by DFID and USAID.
Dobin has a younger brother (Lak) who lives in New York. Lak also went to the States as a Rotaract scholar to complete his Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ilinois.
The Vohras’ have had a long standing tradition of serving the Indian Armed Forces since 1857. Several of the Vohras’ received decorations for their valor and longstanding service that date back to as early as 1864.
