Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

We decided to drive to the Cape Hatteras Light House. It was well worth the trip. The drive is awesome! Great scenery when you get to Cape Hatteras and start driving down toward the Light House!

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, with its black and white candy-cane stripes, is one of the most famous and recognizable lighthouses in the world. Protecting one of the most treacherous stretches of the Outer Banks, with a beam of light that spans 20 miles into the ocean, the lighthouse is also the world’s tallest brick lighthouse at a staggering 208 ft. tall

The Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is a string of peninsulas and barrier islands separating the Atlantic Ocean from mainland North Carolina. From north to south, the largest of these include: Bodie Island (which used to be an island but is now a peninsula due to tropical storms and hurricanes), Hatteras Island, Ocracoke Island, Portsmouth Island, and the Core Banks. Over time, the exact number of islands and inlets changes as new inlets are opened up, often during a breach created during violent storms, and older inlets close usually.

he Outer Banks is made up of 14 towns: Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Manteo, Wanchese, Hatteras, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras Village and Ocracoke. Once fishing villages, these towns blended together over the years to create the beach we know and love today.
